GMAT Exam Overview

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a globally recognized standardized management entrance examination used for admission to MBA, Master’s in Management (MiM), and other graduate business programs at leading business schools worldwide. The exam is conducted by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC).

The GMAT is designed to assess candidates’ quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, and data analysis skills, which are important for success in graduate-level business education.

GMAT Exam Sections

The current GMAT consists of three sections:

Quantitative Reasoning – Tests mathematical reasoning and problem-solving abilities.
Verbal Reasoning – Evaluates reading comprehension and critical reasoning skills.
Data Insights – Measures the ability to analyze, interpret, and evaluate data presented in different formats.

Candidates can generally choose the order in which they take the sections, giving them greater flexibility during the test.

GMAT in India

Indian students can take the GMAT at authorized test centers in India or, where available and eligible, through the online exam option. Unlike many Indian MBA entrance exams, the GMAT does not follow a single annual examination date. Candidates can select an available test date according to their preparation and application schedule.

The GMAT score is accepted by numerous business schools in India and abroad, including several leading MBA and management institutions.

Why Take the GMAT?

The GMAT is particularly useful for candidates planning to apply to international MBA programs or business schools that specifically accept GMAT scores. Its flexible testing schedule and multiple-attempt policy also allow candidates to plan their applications strategically.

For admission, business schools may consider the GMAT score along with academic performance, work experience, essays, recommendation letters, interviews, and other application components.

The GMAT 2026 is conducted throughout the year, giving candidates the flexibility to choose an exam date based on their preparation and admission deadlines. Test dates are available on multiple days, including weekends, subject to seat availability.

Candidates are advised to register for the GMAT well in advance to secure their preferred date, time, and test centre. Ideally, applicants should plan their test date at least 2–3 months ahead, especially if they have specific business schools or application deadlines in mind.

GMAT Test Centre Slot Booking

Candidates planning to take the GMAT at a test centre should book their exam date and time well in advance. Test-centre slots can fill up quickly, particularly during peak admission periods. Therefore, applicants are advised to select their preferred GMAT exam date, test centre, and time slot early to avoid limited availability and secure a convenient testing schedule.

GMAT Online Exam Dates 2026

GMAT Online exam is offered almost every day and at every hour of the day. This testing method is convenient and flexible but USD 25 more expensive than GMAT at exam centre. Applicants can schedule a test appointment maximum 24 hours before an available testing window.

Generally, GMAT slots can be booked for GMAT Online on a rolling basis.
Applicants should try booking GMAT test dates 2-3 months in advance.
Applicants can take the GMAT exam (online or at a test centre) up to 5 times within a rolling 12-month period and 8 times in a lifetime. There must be a minimum of 16 days gap between attempts, regardless of how the exam is attempted.
The GMAT Online exam is available in most locations worldwide, with exceptions for Mainland China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and Sudan due to regulatory and local data privacy rules.

The GMAT Online exam follows the same overall structure, content, and scoring methodology as the GMAT conducted at authorized test centres, providing candidates with a consistent testing experience regardless of the exam mode.
